Weather changes have an impact on arthritis

HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - Swings in weather and temperature aren’t good for anyone but for people with arthritis, it can be painful. Officials said in colder temperatures those with arthritis have heighten pain sensitivity and when it’s hot they can fell more inflammation and swelling in their joints. Officials said temperatures isn’t the biggest factor when it comes to arthritic pain.

“It seems that weather does play a bigger role than temperature changes itself,” said Dacia Oakeson, Family Nurse Practitioner at Hastings Family Care. “Because they have linked barometric pressure changes to causing more arthritic discomfort. So as the barometric pressure drops it can cause like the bones and tendons and joints to feel more swollen.”

Oakeson said more pain and discomfort comes when there’s rain and cold weather, that’s when the barometric change drops. Adding wind speeds effect barometric pressure. Weather also affects more than just the physical aspect of dealing with arthritis.

“Seasonal Affective Disorder is like a depression that has a seasonal pattern,” said Oakeson. “So symptoms of your depression are going to be worst generally in the months where, there’s less sunshine, the temperatures are not as nice, your not getting to go out and be as physically active as you normally would.”

Oakeson said a lot of people with arthritis suffer from seasonal depression. Adding, people can fight off arthritic pain by moving their feet.

“The main thing that people can do is stay active,” said Oakeson. “So getting as much movement, getting as much activity as you can. I know sometimes pain limits activity, but most people that have an osteoarthritis movement is going to be what helps lessen their pain.”

Oakeson said using heat a heating pad and ice pack can help the joints. Adding, staying in shape also helps with arthritic pain.
